When you step aboard Shore Thing, one of the first things that greets you—besides the view—is the unmistakable scent of something delicious.
Tucked into a 40-foot repurposed shipping container at the heart of the platform is a bar and gathering space operated by BG Brewing, the team behind some of Pittsburgh’s most beloved beer and hospitality experiences. The food and drink you’ll find here are as carefully curated as the barge itself, rooted in the theme:
“Pittsburgh to the Pacific.”
It’s a flavor-forward nod to the on-water location, to co-founder Matt Katase’s Hawaiian heritage, and to the creative collision of cultures that makes Pittsburgh such a rich, welcoming place.
A river destination for food & drink
BG’s Shore Thing presence is more than just a place to grab a bite. It’s a hospitality experience—thoughtfully designed and lovingly run by Alaina Katase, Matt’s partner and BG’s hospitality lead.
Alaina brings warmth and detail to everything she touches—from the menu to the layout to the way each guest is greeted. Whether you’re ordering a refreshing drink, sampling something playful from the summer-inspired menu, or simply soaking in the moment under the chandelier, the experience is meant to feel effortless, joyful, and deeply human.
The container itself has been retrofitted to support BG’s seasonal service, powered by solar and surrounded by views of the Allegheny. Inside: good vibes. Outside: seating that flows right into the open-air art, performance, and relaxation spaces of Shore Thing.
And yes, there’s vanilla ice cream with sprinkles on the menu. What’s a day on the river without something a little nostalgic, a little messy, and a whole lot of fun?
You asked for it. We listened.
For years, Riverlife has heard the same question from people all over the city:
- “Why aren’t there more places to grab a bite or a drink by the river?”
- “Where’s the ice cream?”
- “I finished this bike ride, but… what’s next?”
Shore Thing is our joyful answer.
Creating public space for people to gather, relax, and enjoy the riverfronts is core to Riverlife’s mission—and this partnership with BG Brewing helps bring that to life in an entirely new way. You don’t have to own a boat or book a reservation. You just have to show up.

Heritage meets hospitality
“Pittsburgh to the Pacific” isn’t just a clever tagline: it’s a heartfelt theme. It captures BG Brewing’s signature style: blending local roots with global influence, and treating beer, food, and hospitality as a form of storytelling.
Expect light, seasonal flavors. Tropical twists. Familiar favorites with a sunny edge. Every part of the menu is designed to complement the space—easy to carry, fun to share, and always in conversation with the environment around it.
The BG Brewing vibe
If you’ve visited BG Brewing’s home base in Braddock, you know the feeling: welcoming and thoughtful. It’s a place where experimentation meets hospitality, and where every detail reflects intention.
That same spirit is alive and well at Shore Thing. This creative collaboration is designed to highlight what happens when local business meets non-profit looking to take a big swing and change the way Pittsburgh experiences the rivers.

Visit all season long
BG Brewing’s hospitality hub at Shore Thing is open during most public events and riverfront activations throughout the summer. Whether you’re here for yoga, a DJ set, an art moment, or a meet-up with friends, it’s your go-to spot to pause, connect, and refresh.
Come hungry. Come curious. And stay for the view.
Come as you are
Shore Thing was designed with one big idea in mind: this space belongs to everyone. You never need to make a purchase to spend time here. There’s no ticket, no minimum, and no dress code—just the open invitation to show up and enjoy the riverfront.
BG Brewing adds comfort and convenience: a cold drink on a hot day, an ice cream cone while the DJ plays… but they’re just part of the experience. The platform is yours whether you’re here to grab a bite or just stretch out on a net and watch the water go by.
Public space should feel this good.
