The future of Allegheny Landing

October 8, 2025

Pittsburghers have long known that the view from the North Shore is one of the best in the city. But for too long, the experience at Allegheny Landing hasn’t matched the promise of that view. Tucked between two of the city’s most recognizable bridges, the park has felt loved to death, and in need of a bit of care.

That’s why Riverlife is leading a reimagining of Allegheny Landing, one of Pittsburgh’s first modern riverfront parks.

A Park with Deep Roots

Nestled between the Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol Bridges, Allegheny Landing has always held historic and cultural significance. The park, dedicated in 1984, was once the first riverfront sculpture park in the country—a testament to Pittsburgh’s belief in the power of public art and its potential to transform post-industrial space.

But the land has a much longer story. Before it was a park, it was a hub of industry and labor—home to housing, rail lines, and most notably, the Penn Cotton Mill, where women and children famously went on strike in 1845 to demand fair wages and a 10-hour workday.

That legacy of resilience is woven into the site, even if it’s not always visible. Over time, the park’s aging infrastructure and underwhelming amenities have made it feel disconnected, worn down, and underused. We knew it could be so much more.

A Riverfront Reimagined

In 2023, Riverlife launched a repositioning effort at Allegheny Landing, working with a design team led by landscape architecture firm dwg. and an advisory committee of community voices and experts. What emerged is a vision that honors the past, responds to present-day needs, and looks boldly toward the future.

The new Allegheny Landing will offer:

  • Water and nature play areas that invite families and kids to interact directly with the riverfront.
  • A flexible performance stage for small-to-midsize cultural events, music, and celebrations.
  • Inviting green infrastructure, including restored native plantings and better stormwater management.
  • Improved accessibility, with new pathways, better sightlines, and seating areas that welcome all visitors.
  • Public art and sculpture woven into the design, staying true to the park’s roots as a cultural space.

This isn’t just a facelift. It’s a transformation that will make the Landing more resilient, accessible, and joyful for generations to come.

A place to pause, gather, and celebrate

If you visited Shore Thing this summer, you’ve already experienced a small taste of what’s possible. This project was intentionally docked at Allegheny Landing because we wanted to reconnect people to this incredible site—not just as a park, but as a canvas for what’s next.

During Memorial Day weekend’s Riverlife Chalk Fest, festivalgoers helped artists prepare elements of the Pittsburgh Chandelier, a stunning sculpture coming soon to the Landing. Janel Young’s mural, “A New Wave,” stretches vibrantly across the floating platform just offshore, offering another example of how this space is evolving into a place of art, play, and possibility.

This summer’s activations are just the beginning.

What’s next?

Allegheny Landing is one of the centerpieces of the Sister Bridges Experience, Riverlife’s larger effort to link the North Shore and Downtown riverfronts into one vibrant, seamless destination. The Landing will connect directly to updates coming to Allegheny Riverfront Park on the Downtown side, via the three iconic bridges that frame this stretch of river.

Designs are finalized, and Riverlife is actively raising funds and aligning partners to begin construction. And because we believe in long-term stewardship, we’ve also established a $1 million care and maintenance endowment to ensure this space remains beautiful, safe, and accessible well into the future.

Why it matters

Pittsburgh’s rivers are more than our backdrop—they’re the center of our experiences. And parks like Allegheny Landing help make that feel more personal, more playful, more connected.

This is a space that’s belonged to Pittsburghers for decades, even if they didn’t always feel invited. Our work now is to make sure everyone can see themselves in its future.

We can’t wait to welcome you there.
