SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Creative Corps: Light Through Color with La Vispera
DESCRIPTION:Join La Vispera for a hands-on workshop beneath the shade structure artwork they created for Shore Thing. Participants will explore the same materials and techniques used in the installation\, including selecting\, cutting\, and assembling discarded plastics into original artworks to take home. \nWith design options for varying skill levels\, this workshop offers a firsthand introduction to La Vispera’s creative process and sustainable approach to artmaking. \nThis workshop is part of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist program series\, presented by Shiftworks Community + Public Arts and made possible by the City of Pittsburgh’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Arts Programming initiative. For more info\, visit: pittsburghcreativecorps.org. \nAbout the Artist \nLa Vispera is an art collective between Kelly Jimenez and Alejandro Franco\, both Colombian artists who specialize in creating highly crafted works of art using discarded materials. Our repertoire includes stop-motion animation\, photography\, sculptures\, and\, predominantly\, stained glass windows made from single-use plastic. \nAs nature enthusiasts\, we continually strive to bring environmental issues to the forefront of our art. Our stained glass pieces are a testament to our commitment to this cause. Through the use of the material’s translucency and color variations\, we have transformed what is typically a transient and detrimental substance into something of great beauty that we consider worth preserving. \nRegistration is required below.

SUMMARY:*POSTPONED* Sounds on the Shore w/ HUNY XO
DESCRIPTION:*This Sounds on the Shore event is postponed due to poor air quality. We will update this page with any re-scheduled date.* \nBred in New York\, NY and currently based in Pittsburgh (named Person of the Year in Music 2021 by Pittsburgh City Paper)\, huny’s work in music and the visual arts is rooted in exalting Black women & QTBIPOC communities. As a co-founder and the Experience Lead of Honcho’s Queer Fam Fund\, as well as consulting on diversity outreach for other festivals and collectives\, her mission to expand visibility and access in nightlife culture is a through-line in everything she tackles. Beyond PGH\, huny has played NYC\, LA\, SF\, Philly\, Detroit\, Puerto Vallarta\, and Morelos\, MX. Her festival credits include Honcho Campout\, Somos\, Desertopia\, and Bahidora. Referred to as a “rising star” by LA’s Muy Muy Limited and a “Pittsburgh staple” by Resident Advisor\, her sets are best described as highly danceable and genre-defying: club\, house\, techno\, dancehall\, hip-hop…anything with a nasty beat and embedded in Blackness can get it.

Paddlers then have the option to return to the Venture Outdoors dock by kayak or depart from Shore Thing. \nTrip Leaders\nTrained Kayak Pittsburgh Excursionists will go over how to use common kayaking gear on land and then will guide the group on the water. \nActivity level\nBeginner – This is a slow paced\, introductory paddle designed for kayakers with little to no experience. If you are hesitant to paddle on the river\, check out our events at North Park or our Beginner River Paddles. \nAge requirements\nAll paddlers are required to be at least 35lbs and 3 years of age. Anyone under the age of 13 MUST be in a tandem kayak with an adult. Each paddler must still have their own ticket. \nDistance\nParticipants can expect to cover roughly 1-1.5 miles on the river. \nWhat’s included \n\nProfessional Guide\nRental equipment if not providing your own\nMeal at Shore Thing following the paddle!\n\nRegistration is required at this link. Space is limited\, and we will likely reach capacity.

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Creative Corps: Pollinate Your Creative Flow with Celeste Neuhaus
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will engage with the river and local ecosystem to discover the interconnections between their creative process\, the act of pollination\, and the element of water. \nThrough writing prompts and guided watercolor explorations participants will be supported through making contact with their creative blocks\, allowing for these blocks to release and metamorphosize into flow. No prior experience necessary to participate. \nEach participant will leave with seeds and seedlings from a local micro-nursery to plant at home to contribute to pollinator pathways. They will also be gifted a watercolor set and sketchbook to paint their ongoing growth. \nAbout the Artist: \nCeleste Neuhaus (she/they) is a multimodal artist and witch who constellates magic\, ecology\, and healing. Their sculptural objects\, assemblages\, paintings\, and guided rituals vividly materialize the often subconscious interdependencies between the continuum of the somatic – psychological – political – ecological – cosmological. \nShe is the originator of Conjure Creativity: one-on-one sessions and group workshops where she guides participants into deeper embodied alignment with their unique creative process. This work is an offering of service and devotion to the wildness and mystery that ignite and nourish each individual’s inner spark. \nRegistration is required below.

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Creative Corps: Kinesthetic Instruments: Objects for Play and Noticing with Makenzie O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:Kinesthetic Instruments is a hands-on workshop inviting participants to reflect on stagnation and movement through the making of small kinetic sculptures. Using paper\, pliable plant materials\, and waxed linen thread\, participants will tie\, glue\, stitch\, and assemble materials to create objects that respond to wind\, gesture\, and interaction. \nInspired by windsocks used to measure wind\, kites that have long symbolized liberation and connection\, and the playfulness of pinwheels\, these handmade objects become tools for noticing\, connecting\, and imagining. Part sculpture and part instrument\, they invite us to tune into the relationship between body and environment. \nTogether\, we’ll slow down\, pay attention\, and discover how movement can transform the unseen into something visible and shared. \nAbout the Artist \nMak is an artist\, designer\, and researcher whose practice centers care-full space-making\, understanding spaces as living systems of exchange between bodies\, materials\, memory\, and meaning. They are drawn toward processes of possibility and approach design as a form of relationship-building\, a way of tending to the invisible forces that shape how people feel\, move\, and orient themselves in the world. \nDrawing from disability studies\, phenomenology\, and feminist design theory\, Mak investigates how environments structure power through their affordances — how they invite\, restrict\, or reshape embodied experience. Their work examines how spatial and material systems can either constrain or expand possibility\, and how design might contribute to more just and equitable ways of dwelling in and moving through the world. \nThrough publication design\, spatial interventions\, environmental graphics\, and material fabrication\, they develop projects that foreground lived experience\, inviting attentiveness\, sensory openness\, presence\, and belonging. \nRegistration is required below.

SUMMARY:jazzjAM in partnership with the August Wilson African American Cultural Center w/ John Shannon
DESCRIPTION:Arts and culture will feature prominently on Riverlife’s Shore Thing this summer\, including live jazz every third Saturday morning of the month. It’s jazzjAM\, in partnership with the August Wilson African American Cultural Center. This event is part of the Shore Thing Performing Arts Series presented by The Charity Randall Foundation. jazzjAM is supported by Citizens. \nJohn Shannon \nWhen it comes to bluesy\, soulful\, straight-ahead jazz\, few American cities swing like Pittsburgh. Guitarist John Shannon\, a Pittsburgh native\, follows in the lineage of George Benson\, Jimmy Ponder\, Joe Pass\, and Joe Negri — masters\, each rooted in Pittsburgh\, who carried the City of Bridges’ singular dialect onto the world stage. \nShannon carries that legacy forward on his debut full-length jazz album\, A Day in Tarifa\, on Jazzbook Records. The organ-trio set features Cliff Barnes on Hammond organ and James Johnson III on drums\, and its originals range from hometown landmarks like “Four One Two” and “Liberty Bridge” to the windswept Spanish coast that inspired its title track. \n“This is actually my debut jazz record\,” Shannon explains. “I’ve put out other records\, but this is the first one where the writing is jazz centric and for a classic organ trio.” The music ties his Pittsburgh roots to southern Spain and his search for sound in nature. It’s both a return home and a new beginning — shaped on the road\, tested onstage\, and distilled into his own voice. \nShannon began shaping that voice early. His debut\, American Mystic (2008)\, was praised for its intimacy\, followed by Songs of the Desert River (2011) and Time Was a Lie (2012). In 2021 he produced State of Mind for Con Alma Records\, capturing Pittsburgh’s scene during Covid. \nHe started guitar at six. By high school he was performing around Pittsburgh\, studying with bassist Dwayne Dolphin\, saxophonist Eric Kloss\, and organist Mike Ross. At Berklee he trained with Mick Goodrick and Wayne Krantz\, alongside classmates Hiromi Uehara\, Bob Reynolds\, Walter Smith III\, and Kendrick Scott. In 1999 he formed Waking Vision with drummer Martin Valihora and bassist Mitch Cohn\, touring Europe before he turned twenty. Soon after\, he stepped in on guitar with Hiromi’s Sonicbloom\, subbing for David Fiuczynski on live dates around the world. \nThrough the 2010s he expanded into new territory: the rock trio theSHIFT’s 7th Direction (2015); SweetPro\, the Reggie Watts-created ensemble behind Louie; Louis C.K.’s film Fourth of July (2022); and his own albums Guitar Improvisations (2018) and Waking Vision’s The Breathing Earth (2023). In 2022 he signed with Jazzbook Records\, making A Day in Tarifa his first statement for the label. \nThough his work spans jazz\, rock\, and film\, Shannon has remained rooted in Pittsburgh. “They call it the Pittsburgh quarter note\,” he explains. “If you don’t swing\, you’re not really accepted as part of the scene.” He points to Roger Humphries — drummer on Horace Silver’s Song for My Father and a longtime mentor in Pittsburgh — and bassist Dwayne Dolphin\, whose credits include Wynton Marsalis and Fred Wesley. For Shannon\, they embody the same working-class\, soulful feel carried forward by Benson\, Ponder\, Pass\, and Negri. \nA Day in Tarifa draws from those roots while opening outward. Tracks like “Four One Two\,” “Liberty Bridge\,” and “Allegheny Current” are grounded in Pittsburgh’s landscape. The spacious\, hypnotic “Marseille” nods to the late pianist and fellow Pittsburgh native Ahmad Jamal. The title track evokes Tarifa\, Spain’s southern tip: “There is an inspiring mystique in Tarifa\, you can see across the water to North Africa ands it’s also the windsurfing capitol of the world\,” Shannon says. Other pieces — “Golden Wave\,” “Sunrise\,” “Star Travel\,” and “Slipstream” — draw inspiration from the sounds of wind\, trees\, and rivers. \nChoosing the organ trio format is itself a statement. Guitar\, Hammond organ\, and drums — rooted in the soul-jazz tradition of Jimmy Smith’s trios and the guitar lineage of Grant Green — remain one of jazz’s most recognizable settings. Shannon leans into that heritage with Barnes’s organ voice and Johnson’s deep-pocket time. “I love the sound of the organ trio\,” he says. “It has such a trance nature to it.” Their interplay gives A Day in Tarifa its identity: straight-ahead and hard-bop in feel\, with the soulful drive that defines Pittsburgh jazz. \nFor Shannon\, the album also reaffirms the importance of songwriting. “All the greats in jazz were also great songwriters\,” he says. “That’s where players develop their sound — on their own music. It’s about the communication of a song.”\nA spiritual strand runs through his work — meditation\, vision-quest\, and engagement with devotional traditions. Ravi Shankar’s Chants of India (1997)\, produced by George Harrison\, remains a touchstone\, echoing his own practice of finding the mystical in sound. \nSince 2019 he has co-owned and curated Con Alma\, one of the only musician-owned jazz clubs in the U.S. He programs local stalwarts alongside touring artists\, fosters a listening-first space\, and works to reawaken Pittsburgh’s jazz consciousness. “Con Alma is more of a vision than a dream\,” he says. In 2021 Esquire named Con Alma one of the “Best Bars in America\,” and through OH! Jazz streaming the club carries Pittsburgh’s sound worldwide. \nWith A Day in Tarifa\, Shannon makes his first full jazz statement. In his hands\, the guitar becomes a bridge — linking Steel City’s swing tradition to his own voice.

SUMMARY:The Citizen Science Lab: Oceanography
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to dive into the enormous world of Ocean Life? Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface and face many hazards. Students will gain an understanding of oceans and the hazards marine life faces. This educational program will explore the theme of Environmental Science and\, more specifically\, focus on Oceans. The exact number of experiments will vary depending on the student’s needs\, abilities\, and behavior\, but we strive for 2-3 unique experiments under that category for a 60- minute program. \nThe Citizen Science Lab brings hands-on STEM to Pittsburgh (and beyond!)\, building real pipelines that take youth from curiosity to career.
