SUMMARY:River Life 101
DESCRIPTION:For over a quarter century Riverlife has worked to improve Pittsburgh’s riverfronts and make them a more vital part of our city. Riverlife believes that “riverfronts belong to everyone”. Usually\, “everyone” refers to people… but on September 24\, we’re expanding that definition and exploring all the life that occupies our rivers. \nThis free\, open house workshop\, hosted aboard Riverlife’s Shore Thing – a floating public platform on the Allegheny River – will invite visitors to explore life in and on the rivers from a broader perspective. What lives in our rivers? What plants\, animals\, and other species rely on them for survival? Riverlife’s partner organizations are experts in the local environment\, and will be on deck to present and engage visitors in fun\, interactive exhibits about river life here in Pittsburgh.  \nWhat to Expect: \n\nConduct hands on water and soil sampling with the Allegheny County Conservation District.\n\nCreate your own team of river critter super heroes with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.\n\nExplore the impacts of invasive species and flooding on our rivers with the Kamin Science Center.\n\nNurdle-sort with the Three Rivers Waterkeeper and learn how these tiny plastic pellets are polluting our waterways.\nFrom the essential role that the rivers play in bird migration\, to the many mussels\, fish\, and other species that call them home\, to the invasive species that harm local populations; attendees can expect to engage with a number of different topics centered on these essential bodies of water. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the vast array of life in\, on\, beside\, and above the rivers\, and their place in making shore the rivers are for everyone\, in the broadest possible sense. \nThese conversations are made possible through the generous support of the Henry L. Hillman Foundation

SUMMARY:Changing Tides: An Autumn Mini-Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“Water is fluid\, soft\, and yielding. But water will wear away rock\, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule\, whatever is fluid\, soft\, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.”\n ― Lao Tzu \nAutumn is a masterful teacher\, reminding us that change is the only constant. Join Emily Balawejder aboard Riverlife’s Shore Thing for a special autumn mini-retreat that honors the season’s wisdom as we close a summer of yoga floating aboard this beautiful platform. \nEvery action can hold meaning if we allow it. Ceremony and ritual help us mark the passage of time and embrace the next steps ahead. In this riverside gathering\, we’ll pause\, reflect\, and reconnect with ourselves through ritual\, movement\, and meditation. \nWhat to Expect\nOpening welcome + grounding meditation\n \nWe’ll begin with an element-focused welcome and a guided meditation to cultivate ease in the inevitability of change\, accompanied by complimentary seasonal herbal tea. \nIntention-setting ritual\n \nA reflective practice to honor summer’s gifts and set intentions for the season ahead. \nSlow-flow yoga practice (60 minutes)\n \nA mindful movement practice designed to balance grounding and letting go\, strength and surrender. \nClosing contemplation\n \nSpace for journaling\, reflection\, and riverside connection\, with prompts provided to carry into the new season. \nWhat to Bring \nA yoga mat and comfortable layers for the outdoor setting. Journals are welcome; note paper will also be provided. \nTiming \nThe retreat begins promptly at 9:00am. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to settle in so we can begin together.
